Couple of interesting news
Well there are more than one good news from yesterday and couple a days ago so I have decided to put them all in one post :)
In this interesting post, John Lilly, Mozilla’s Chief Operating Officer, estimates that Firefox is used by more than a 126 millions user around the world. How did he get this number? Well on every start Firefox will ping Firefox Application Update Service for new version of program or new versions of plugins - so with a help of this service they can track unique number of Firefox users; in November it is 49 millions. Then he multiple this number with 3 (because many companies runs firewalls that prevents Firefox Application Update Service, ...). Anyway, in November 2006 number of unique users (tracked by Firefox Application Update Service) was 23 millions, and year after that number is doubled, fact that deserves respect :)
Stable version of KDE 4.0 is delayed. Development team planed to release 4.0 somewhere in December. This is not so surprising news, in recent weeks I have readed in number of posts that 4.0 still have plenty of bugs, and that programmers is doing their best but they just can't make it. I definitely agree with this decision, from my point of view quality of release is more important then actual planed date of release. And when I just take a look of number of new features that 4.0 will bring us, I will definitely wait that KDE guys finish their job. Read more about this here.
I have read more and more
First alpha of Ubuntu 8.04, code name Hardy Heron, is available. This is early release that is just for testing and bugs hunting. You can read here about new features in Ubutnu and here in Kubuntu version. Sadly Kubuntu 8.04 will still be based on 3.5.x version of KDE, but 4.0 will be available in repositories. It seems that Kubuntu developers will focus on stability and functionality in this release.
A very ugly bug was introduced in latest Firefox version 2.0.0.10. Main problem is that most Firefox installation will automatically upgrade to newest version, so this bug will soon hit all users of Firefox. Patch for this bug is not yet available. So people don't be surprised if yours favorite sites suddenly stop to work.
