Trends in screen resolutions – end of 1024px screen era?
Yesterday we started design part of one of our current drupal project. Naturally our designer asks me – ok for which resolution I should optimize site? And I said to him, well client has not have any special request so I guess we should go with standard 1024px screen width resolution in planning phase and optimize site for that.
But this morning while I was browsing news and drinking my first coffee ;) I started to question my position – well, I am using 1280x1024px (or bigger) resolution for the last 2-3 years, maybe better to check some numbers. So I quickly went to mine favorite site for IT data mining (Market Share) and 1024x768 is still on a top of table with 35.79% of market share. But when I took a closer look on numbers I saw that in 2nd, 3th, 4th and 5th places are all resolutions that are bigger then 1024px (width). After some sorting and summing I’ve got the following result:
For a moment, I was little bit amused: 60% of all computers use screen width is greater then 1024px. But this should not be such a big surprise if you take into consideration the pace of price reduction on LCD monitor's market.
On the end I guess we will still take 1024px for this project (at least we are on safe side for now), but very soon (in 1 year?) we will probably be in a position to design sites for two type of users: users with "wide screen" monitors and users with mobile devices. With all this new smart phones, netbooks and small size notebooks that are taking more and more of market share, it would be very unprofessional not to take them in account too.
So I would say that learning in details about drupal theming and client optimization is a good choice for every drupal/web programmer who still do not have enough experience on those fields. There is a chance that this will become an important market segment, if those trends on the hardware market continue.
